Biodynamic (Biological dynamic agriculture) agriculture is a form of organic farming. It is an ecological farming system focused on sustainability. Biodynamic agriculture uses a holistic approach taking into consideration the development and interrelationships of the soil, plants and animals as a self-sustaining system.
In its holistic approach biodynamic farming works to create a healthy system for crops through the use of manures and composts, and other methods which work towards supporting a self-sustaining system. All methods used in biodynamic farming work towards integrating farm animals with crop cultivation, care of the land and the use of fermented herbal and mineral preparations as compost additives and field sprays. Biodynamic farming is distinct from other forms of agricultural practices through the use of an astronomical sowing and planting calendar.
Biodynamic farming has been found to have better energy efficiency of production, a more favourable impact on environment included increased biodiversity, with greater earthworm populations and biomass than conventional farms.
Biodynamic systems rely upon crop rotations, use of residual crops, animal manures, legumes, green manures, mechanical cultivation, cultural control, minimal application of approved mineral-bearing rocks and aspects of biological pest management to maintain soil productivity and tilth, to supply plant nutrients and to control diseases, insects, weeds and other pests.
