MAF Biosecurity New Zealand is convening another Biosecurity Summit for all biosecurity system stakeholders. "Biosecurity System Future Directions" is an ideal opportunity for interested and involved participants in the biosecurity system to meet, discuss issues and raise concerns relating to biosecurity and to share information. The event will be held 24 & 25 November, 2010 in Wellington. Representatives from industry, importers and exporters, tertiary institutes, the science community, community groups and central, regional and local government have attended in the past.
Our focus for this year's Summit is the Biosecurity System Future Directions. This is timely, as work is to commence on a review of the Biosecurity strategy that will ultimately lead to an updated Biosecurity Strategy for New Zealand to be issued in July 2012.
Key themes for the Summit range from:
market access issues current and in the future the TransTasman travel and trade focus (given our special relationship with Australia)
the Australian biosecurity review that was completed in 2009 and subsequent initiatives
developments in science and research developments that we can expect to influence the future
specific topics around the future of pest management and potential arrangements for partnerships in the biosecurity system will also be explored
offshore initiatives and good practice internationally
Keynote speakers confirmed so far are:
Rona Mellor, Deputy Secretary with responsibility for the Biosecurity Services Group, AQIS, Australia
Gretchen H. Stanton, Secretary of the SPS Committee, World Trade Organisation, Geneva.
John (Jack) W. Armstrong, PhD, Quarantine Scientific Ltd.
