[DPI News 31/08/09] DPI has hosted Invasive Plants and Animals: A Climate of Change, a forum for agencies and organisations involved in the management of invasive plants and animals. More than 120 stakeholders attended. The Minister for Agriculture, Joe Helper, opened proceedings by welcoming participants and formally releasing the draft Invasive Plants and Animals Policy Framework for stakeholder consultation. “The Brumby Government is taking action to ensure the management of invasive species in Victoria is dynamic, adaptable and aligned with national priorities and actions,” Mr Helper said. “Everyone – government, industry and the community must work together to ensure Victoria is best protected,” he said. Dr Graeme Pearman of Monash University gave a challenging presentation on climate change, one of the macro-environmental changes impacting on invasive species management in Victoria. The forum included a presentation from Executive Director Biosecurity Victoria, Dr Hugh Millar, on the Biosecurity Strategy for Victoria and from Director Invasive Plants and Animals, Mr John Burley, on the policy framework. |

The forum gave participants the opportunity to discuss current issues and new approaches to invasive plant and animal management through a series of interactive sessions.The forum was jointly convened by the Invasive Plants and Animals Branch and Landscape Protection Portfolio. The draft IPA policy framework can be viewed on the Agriculture, Food and Forestry section of the DPI website. |
