Title: Stop the spread of weeds at home, work and play - NSW Department of Primary Industries

[NSW DPI 20 Oct. 2010] -- NSW has no space for weeds at home, at work or at play - that is the message of a new Industry & Investment NSW campaign that is being unveiled at the Australian National Field Days in Orange this week. NSW Weed Awareness Coordinator, Jessica Grantley, said that campaign aims to highlight the important role we can all play in our day to day lives to stop the spread of weeds.

"NSW No Space 4 Weeds is a state-wide weed awareness program that highlights that weeds are everyone's problem and provides opportunities for the community of NSW to become part of the solution," Ms Grantley said.

"This year's campaign is designed to educate the community on how good weed hygiene practices can prevent weed spread and new weed incursions.

"Many of our day to day activities at home, work and play are actually helping weeds spread without us knowing it."

"Learning how weeds spread and doing easy activities such disposing of garden waste suitably and never dumping garden waste on roadsides or in bushland, always cleaning earthmoving and farm equipment before moving them to new areas, or cleaning camping and bushwalking gear before going home or to a new spot, will make a big difference to preventing unwanted plants popping up in new areas."

"With more than 100 weed species threatening more than 400 plant and animal species in NSW, it is important that we all play a part and help stop the spread - everyone CAN make a difference."

NSW - No Space 4 Weeds is an initiative of the Industry & Investment NSW.
