Title: Australian agricultural research agencies unite under new name - ABARES
[ABARES 1 December 2010] -- Two of Australia'ss leading research
organisations have finalised their merger, boosting the nation's capacity to
tackle significant challenges facing the agriculture, fisheries and forestry
sectors. Today's unveiling of the organisation's new name marks the final stage
of the merger of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics
(ABARE) and the Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS). From 1 December, the new
organisation will be known as the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource
Economics and Sciences (ABARES).
The acting Executive Director of ABARES , Paul Morris, said the new name for
the organisation provides a clear description of what the bureau does and its
areas of expertise, while maintaining stakeholder recognition.
"The merger, which took place on 1 July this year, has so far been a great
success, with the continued production of the full range of quality outputs that
ABARE and BRS were known for."
"In addition, we have been able to increase the opportunities for research
that combines integrated science and economic analysis," Mr Morris said.
ABARES will continue to play an important role by supporting the government
with up-to-date data and analysis on the agriculture and natural resources
sectors, publishing key reports such as Australian Commodities,
Australian Crop Report, State of the Forests Report, Fishery Status
Report, and hosting the Outlook Conference and DAFF Science Awards in March
2011.
ABARES also presently provides economic commodity analysis, data and research
on the minerals and energy sector.
