Title: Fireweed in Bega Valley cannot be eradicated

[ABC News 11 Jan 2011] -- The war against a noxious weed on the New South Wales far south coast has taken a turn for the worse. The Bega Valley Shire has recently removed fireweed from its list of top targeted weeds because it is outstripped the council's ability to maintain an eradication program. And now the neighbouring Eurobodalla says it has also lost control and is looking at new strategies including biological methods and better public education. The fireweed committee convenor, Keith Dance, says small rural blocks pose a major problem.

"One of the other interesting things that came out of the meeting is what do we do with people who own small blocks of land who are physically incapable," he said.

"In other words they haven't got the gear or their health wasn't good enough so we are going to investigate a program of maybe sort of community groups get together in that area and give these people a hand."
