[Echo - Bellarine 07 July 2011, p.4] -- A PRETTY but deadly water weed has been found in Ocean Grove. State-prohibited weed water hyacinth was recently found at Bluewater Lake, where it is suspected to have been deliberately planted. The plant is one of the world’s worst and has poses a great threat to the lake’s health, according to DPI biosecurity officer Kate Weir. "Water hyacinth grows quickly and can completely cover the water surface, blocking light and reducing oxygen levels in the water," she said. "This results in a negative impact on native flora and fauna, recreational activities such as boating and fishing, and commercial use of the water." Water hyacinth is a freefloating aquatic plant and grows up to 65cm tall, with bulbous stems filled with air cells. Locals who spot a suspicious plant are urged to report sightings to DPI’s hotline on 136 186.
