Title: South Australian natural resource staff tour Victoria’s pest management program
[DPI News 16/11/09] A group of South Eastern Natural Resource Management (SE NRM) members recently took part in an action packed four days, touring Victoria’s Invasive Plants and Animals (IPA) programs. The tour was directed towards gaining a greater understanding of common cross border issues regarding Plant and Animal Pest Management within Victoria. The topics related to project design, direction, alignment and management that DPI has developed.
The tour was organised to assist in building productive partnerships with our neighbouring state to manage the barriers experienced when working across state borders and legislation. The aim was to develop stronger communication and relationships with our neighbours when working together to manage cross border IPA issues.

The group of 12 was lead by Justine Drew, Operations Manager with the SE NRM Board. Participants were particularly interested in the changes that DPI has adopted over the past ten years aligning priorities, projects and strategies to national strategies and initiatives. Of interest were the key issues and investment areas within Victoria compared to South Australia.
A range of key note speakers presented matters across Victoria’s Biosecurity Strategy including Weed Alert, Mexican Feather Grass, exotic animal response and the noxious weed review. Speakers included Brett Harrison who spoke about Biosecurity and Invasive Plant and Animal Management in Victoria and John Matthews, who covered a number of topics from the Future Farming Initiative (FFI), Regionally Prohibited Weed project and asset protection regarding our rabbit program to bush fire recovery. Through the range of speakers the NRM team learnt how most aspects of Plant and Animal Pest Management is developed, planned and implemented within DPI.
