Title: Disease could help tackle Parramatta grass

[ABC 08 August 2011] -- A naturally occuring disease that could kill the noxious weed giant Parramatta grass has been discovered in northern NSW. NSW Department of Primary Industries researcher David Officer says he's looking at ways to commercialise the fungus for use by affected landholders. He says there's no known risk of the disease spreading to other plants. "The work that we've done on host specificity is testing so far showing that only giant parramatta grass is affected," he said. "We'd actually like it to be affecting more of the weedy grasses and we hope to do some work to encourage the disease to work into those other weedy species."
