Title: Bush Guardians Program funding deadline looms.

[Ballarat Courier, 25 Nov 2009, Page: 33] Community groups managing important biodiversity on public land can apply for weed and pest control funding through the Bush Guardians Program, a Department of Sustainability and Environment initiative. Bush Guardian Program project manager Brian Simpson said: "One of the big challenges in biodiversity management is reducing the impact of weeds and pests that threaten key native plants and animals." The Bush Guardians Program, a four-year small-grants program now in its third successful year, is part of the Victorian governments $30 Million Weeds and Pests Initiative 2007-2011.

This year funding totalling $260,000 is available for distribution as grants to community groups. The program is implemented through a variety of projects managed by DSE, Parks Victoria and the Department of Primary Industries. To apply or to find out more about the program, groups can talk to Public Land Services, Land and Fire or Biodiversity Officers in their nearest DSE office. Priorities for protecting threatened flora and fauna will be determined in consultation with DSE and several useful reference resources are available from DSE offices.

The deadline for Bush Guardians applications is Monday November 30. Bush Guardians information and application form are available from dse.vic.gov.au/bu…
