Poor biosecurity management that results in the introduction, establishment and spread of weeds pests and diseases adds costs to and threatens market access for Australia’s rural industries. In recent decades the foundation of biosecurity management in Australia, as in other leading agricultural economies and international regulatory agencies, has progressively moved to science and risk-based assessment, planning and action. This study reviews this trend as it applies in particular to pest and weed threat assessment and management.
