Title: Reclassified weed pulled from NSW shopping centre gardens

[ABC News Wed May 27, 2009] A partnership between the Eurobodalla Shire Council and the Batemans Bay Village Centre has resulted in the removal of noxious weeds from the centre's garden beds. Fountain grass was originally planted when the Village Centre first opened. However, it has only recently been reclassified as a noxious weed. It is now known the weed can spread easily and is a problem for farmland and wildlife habitats.

Council's senior sustainability officer Tracey Rich says the centre is setting a good example for others by removing the weed and replacing it with native plants.

The new natives, supplied by Eurobodalla Botanic Gardens, will be planted on the second day of the Village Centre's Environment and Sustainability Expo, being held on June 4 and 5.
