Title: Associations of chronic liver disease and liver cancer with glyphosate and its metabolites in Thailand

Abstract: Chronic liver disease is an important cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide.

Chronic liver disease patients are more likely to develop liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and cancer, predominantly hepatocellular carcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer.

The World Health Organisation's IARC has classified the herbicide glyphosate as a probable carcinogen and animal studies have shown that glyphosate exposure harms the liver and kidneys.

In this study, the authors investigated the relationship between glyphosate exposure and chronic liver disease and hepatocellular cancer. They analysed urine samples from patients newly diagnosed with hepatocellular cancer, those with chronic liver disease, and healthy individuals for the presence of glyphosate and its metabolites.

Chronic liver disease patients had higher levels of glyphosate compared with hepatocellular carcinoma patients and controls, and glyphosate metabolites were present at significantly higher levels in both hepatocellular carcinoma, and chronic liver disease patients compared with controls.

These results raise concerns about the potential role of glyphosate in chronic liver disease and liver cancer risk.
