It is not that a "cataclysmic toxic future will befall us." Rather, if we eliminate pesticides like glyphosate, our ability to produce food at the level we now enjoy will be diminished. Crop producers do not enjoy applying pesticides due to the toxicity and cost. For most producers, the decision to apply a pesticide is balanced against the need to be profitable. Anybody who has raised crops knows that the battle against weeds is one of the most difficult challenges a producer faces. I and many others use pesticides judiciously as needed, in a manner similar to using an antibiotic for an ear infection prescribed by a doctor. You have created a straw man argument in this piece. As one who grows crops, I do not use glyphosate so that I don't have to use something more toxic. I use it to be profitable in raising crops. Crop producers could go back to not using pesticides like glyphosate, but food production would drop. As a world society, that is always an option we can choose. How many producers would need to go out of business and how high would food prices need to rise before people begin saying that pesticide use may be beneficial?
It seems you have not considered the alternative to not using pesticides. Many in the world today envision a utopian, natural world where farmers are living in harmony with the land, not using pesticides, relying on natural processes to mitigate the threat of weeds, insect pests, and diseases. As much as I would like that, such a world does not exist. Looking back at food production prior to agrochemicals and fertilizers, our food output was significantly lower and the reliability of the food supply was not secure.
It is fair to argue about the morality of chemical manufacturers and their tactics. But the use of chemicals has allowed us to increase a safe, reliable food supply. As humans, we use many chemicals that are toxic at certain doses (e.g. aspirin, salt, caffeine, alcohol) but can be beneficial or enjoyable at other doses. Pesticides are toxins, but can be used improve the output of food per area cultivated. There have been many scientific studies done to show that responsible pesticide use does not result in cataclysmic death. The Agricultural Health Study is one such example aghealth.nih.gov/.
