[ABC News, Aug 13, 2009] It is predicted technology will become increasingly important in the fight against agricultural weeds. A South Australian Research and Development Institute researcher, Dr John Heap, is looking into how spray technology can be varied to be turned on and off depending on the need. He says what is known as site specific weed management is being taken to new levels overseas, although it can actually be quite simple. "A simple example is putting on a backpack full of glyphosate and walking up and down your garden path turning the nozzle on and off when you see a weed ... I have seen a system that uses very sophisticated cameras to identify the exact position of tiny weed seedlings and then fire a minute droplet to the centre of it," he said.
